Gārgī Vācaknavī is the archetypal woman philosopher of the Upaniṣads: she interrogates Yājñavalkya on what underlies water, air and the worlds, and does not stop until he warns her to. Her second round elicits the Bṛhadāraṇyaka's description of the imperishable, akṣara.
