The one anchor that isn’t really in dispute
The Beginningless Dawn already lays out this site’s core position: cyclic cosmic time, the Vedas as apauruṣeya, and an archaeo-astronomical anchor — the vernal equinox recorded in Kṛttikā (Taittirīya Saṃhitā 4.4.10), pointing to roughly 2300–3000 BCE for that layer of scripture, and the traditional Kali Yuga epoch of 3102 BCE. This piece asks a narrower, harder question: what happens when every other serious attempt to date this tradition — epic astronomical retrocalculation, a datable ancient mathematician’s own testimony, and the spade-work of Indian archaeology — is brought in together? The honest answer is that these don’t converge on one number. That’s not a weakness to hide. It’s the actual state of an active field, and it deserves to be shown as one.
The Āryabhaṭīya, composed by the astronomer-mathematician Āryabhaṭa, contains a verse (Kālakriyāpāda 10) in which he states his own age — 23 years old — at a point when 3,600 years of the current Kali Yuga had elapsed. Cross-checked against Āryabhaṭa’s independently attested lifetime, this lands at approximately 499 CE, consistent with everything else known about when he lived and worked. What this actually proves: by the 5th century CE, Indian astronomers held the 3102 BCE start of Kali Yuga as settled, working chronology — not a vague legend, but a fixed epoch precise enough for a mathematician to date his own birth by. It’s a real, primary-source anchor, and it corroborates this site’s existing ~3102 BCE figure. It does not, on its own, tell us anything about events before that epoch, and it is considerably younger than some of the claims below.
The epic-dating attempts — and why they don’t agree with each other
A separate tradition of scholarship tries to date the Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa directly, by reading the epics’ own astronomical references — planetary positions, eclipses, star risings — and retrocalculating when those configurations actually occurred. This is a real and serious method in principle: astronomical positions are in fact calculable across deep time. In practice, applied to poetic and sometimes ambiguous descriptions, it has produced wildly different answers from different researchers using the same underlying approach.
Dr. P.V. Vartak proposed the Mahābhārata war at 5561 BCE, using planetarium-software retrocalculation of the epic’s astronomical passages, and an even earlier date for the Rāmāyaṇa. Dr. Nilesh Oak is the name most associated with popularizing these dates today — but it’s worth being precise about what he actually did: by his own published account, he narrowed candidate dates using one criterion (the “Epoch of Arundhatī”), arrived at four candidates, and then tested Vartak’s pre-existing 5561 BCE figure against 27 further observations, keeping it because it survived his attempts to falsify it. For the Rāmāyaṇa, his method produces 12209 BCE. This is a meaningfully different process from independently deriving a date from evidence — it’s testing an inherited hypothesis, which is a legitimate step in research but not the same claim as two people reaching the same number independently. Prof. K.S. Raghavan, using the same general astronomical-retrocalculation approach, arrives at 3067 BCE for the same event — nearly 2,500 years away from Oak’s figure.
And the method itself has drawn detailed, technical criticism from within the same broad community of researchers taking Vedic antiquity seriously — not from hostile outside dismissal. Shrikant Talageri — cited elsewhere on this site as a serious primary voice on Rigvedic chronology — directly rejects Oak’s central astronomical argument (that a verse describing Arundhatī positioned “ahead of” Vasiṣṭha marks a specific millennia-spanning stellar epoch), reading the verse instead as the text’s own description of an omen — an explicitly abnormal condition, not a stable position usable as a dating tool. Talageri argues for anchoring chronology in carbon dating and comparative linguistics instead, calling the astronomical approach “wishful dating.” Dr. Raja Ram Mohan Roy published an 18-part technical refutation of the 5561 BCE claim, arguing the reasoning ran backward — testing evidence against a predetermined number rather than deriving the number from the evidence. Koch, an independent Swiss specialist in Sanskrit and ancient astronomical computing, makes perhaps the clearest single point: the Mizar-Alcor (Arundhatī-Vasiṣṭha) configuration Oak reads as marking a specific night would, under normal precession, have persisted for thousands of years — which makes it unusable as evidence for one particular date, in either direction. His stated conclusion is that the evidentiary case for 5561 BCE “dissolves into nothing” under scrutiny.
None of this means the underlying question — can the epics be dated astronomically at all — is closed or dismissed. It means the specific 5561 BCE and 12209 BCE figures currently in popular circulation rest on a chain of reasoning that other serious researchers, using the same kind of evidence, have not been able to reproduce or defend.
What Indian archaeology has actually found — and what it doesn’t line up with
Two Archaeological Survey of India excavations are often invoked in this conversation, and both are real, serious, and worth taking seriously on their own terms — which means being precise about what they date to.
Sanauli, excavated by Dr. Sanjay Manjul’s team (2018), uncovered 116 burials including solid-wheel vehicle burials, copper anthropomorphic figures, and swords, radiocarbon dated to 2100–1900 BCE, associated with the Ochre Coloured Pottery (OCP) culture. This is a genuinely significant find about Bronze Age northwest India.
Purana Qila, traditionally identified with the Mahābhārata’s Indraprastha, has yielded Painted Grey Ware (PGW) layers — but ASI’s own radiocarbon dating (Beta Analytic laboratory) places the earliest confirmed Pre-Mauryan/PGW deposits there at as early as 540 BCE. The excavators themselves describe the Indraprastha identification as resting on literary and inscriptional tradition rather than something the dig itself has proven, and note that natural soil has not yet been reached beneath it — meaning whatever may lie beneath is, honestly, still unknown.
Notice what these two dates do not do: they don’t agree with each other (a gap of over 1,300 years), and neither lines up with Oak’s or Vartak’s proposed war dates, nor precisely with the Āryabhaṭa-anchored 3102 BCE tradition. Sanauli is centuries older than the traditional Kali Yuga epoch; Purana Qila’s confirmed layers are over 2,500 years younger than it.
Why this site isn’t giving you one number
Every method above is a genuine, serious attempt to answer the same question, and every one of them gives a different answer: ~3102 BCE (the traditional epoch, corroborated by Āryabhaṭa), ~5561 BCE or ~12209 BCE (Oak, inheriting Vartak, sharply contested by fellow researchers), ~3067 BCE (Raghavan), ~2000 BCE (Sanauli), ~540 BCE-and-younger (Purana Qila’s confirmed layers). Picking whichever number sounds most impressive and presenting it as settled would misrepresent every source cited here, including the ones that support the earliest claims.
What’s actually true, and doesn’t need any single number to be impressive: multiple independent methods — astronomy, epic textual analysis, archaeology — are all reaching into deep time trying to answer this question, from angles that don’t always agree with each other, using evidence and argument that specialists actively contest in public, technical, sourced detail. That’s what a living field of inquiry into a living tradition looks like.
