Chapter 1 · The Musician at the Feast

Krauncha was a gandharva, one of the singers and musicians who play in the courts of heaven. He was good at his work and he loved it. He loved it so much that he was often careless about everything else. One day held a great feast in his court. Every god, sage, and musician of heaven was invited. Krauncha came too, with his veena in hand, already thinking about the songs he would play. The hall was full. People stood close together, talking, laughing, moving from group to group. Krauncha moved through the crowd the way he always did — quickly, happily, and without looking down.
