Born of the combined light of the devas

The demon king Mahishasura had conquered the three worlds. Having performed rigorous penances, he had obtained a specific boon from : he could never be slain by any man, beast, or male deity. Blinded by pride, he took the form of a colossal wild buffalo, leading a demonic army that crushed the Devas and drove Indradev from his celestial throne. The humiliated Devas gathered before , , and , pleading for a savior. As the deities listened to the horrific tales of Mahishasura's cruelty, their faces grew crimson with intense fury. Suddenly, a blinding beam of light shot out of 's face, followed by a brilliant, white-hot stream of energy from 's third eye, and a piercing, golden flame from . From all the other Devas, individual streams of colored light joined the celestial conflagration. The energy gathered into a massive, swirling nebula of cosmic fire that illuminated the entire universe, slowly condensing into a single, breathtakingly powerful female form: , .
