The Earth Dragged into the Deep

The mighty asura Hiraṇyākṣa (the golden-eyed one) had grown so proud of his boons and so contemptuous of the devas that he rolled up the round earth like a mat and carried her down into the cosmic waters (Garbhodaka Ocean) to hide her. Without her, the seasons ceased, sacrifices stopped, and creation itself stood on the edge of collapse. The devas and sages rushed to Brahmā, and Brahmā to Viṣṇu. From the creator's nostril there emerged a tiny black boar — no larger than a thumb. As they watched, it grew: the size of an elephant, the size of a mountain, the size of a rising thundercloud.
✦ Visual cue — A cosmic scene: Brahmā seated on his lotus at his morning devotion; a tiny black boar emerging from his nostril and expanding rapidly into a mountain-sized deity with divine glow.
