Metaphysical Anatomy

The Pañca Kośa

The Taittirīya Upaniṣad presents a highly detailed metaphysical model of the human being as a nested structure of five concentric sheaths (pañca kośa). Each layer progressively veils the innermost radiant core of pure consciousness — the Ātman. This framework maps the inward journey, from physical identification to ultimate spiritual realisation.

Anatomical-spiritual illustration of a yogi in lotus posture displaying five concentric sheaths — muted earth-tone physical body, vibrant cyan nāḍi network, deep-magenta emotional cloud, golden crystalline sacred-geometry lattice, and a radiant white-blue causal egg, set against a starry cosmic backdrop.

In his commentaries, the non-dual philosopher Ādi Śaṅkara explains that these sheaths are not physical parts of the Self but layers of misidentification generated by ignorance (avidyā). When a seeker systematically identifies with, then transcends, each layer, the Self is not created — it is realised as having always been present. This framework aligns with modern holistic health sciences, which recognise that disease often originates as stress-induced blockage in the subtle sheaths before manifesting in the physical body.

Planned interaction: a slider peels away the physical form to reveal the cyan prāṇa channels, the magenta mental field, the golden intellect lattice and finally the radiant causal sphere.
