Vishvarupa Darshana YogaThe Yoga of the Vision of the Universal Form

Moved by Krishna's teaching, Arjuna asks to see Krishna's actual divine, cosmic form. Krishna grants him a divine eye and reveals the Vishvarupa -- a form with countless mouths, eyes, and arms, containing the entire universe, blazing brighter than a thousand suns. Arjuna, awestruck and then terrified, sees all the assembled warriors of both armies rushing into Krishna's fiery mouths like moths into a flame, and Krishna explains that he is time itself, come to destroy them regardless of Arjuna's actions. Overwhelmed, Arjuna offers a long hymn of praise and apology for his earlier familiarity with Krishna, then begs to see Krishna's gentler, human form again. Krishna obliges, and explains that this cosmic vision is granted only through devotion, not through scripture, sacrifice, or austerity, closing the chapter with the promise that whoever acts for Krishna's sake, free of attachment and hostility, truly attains him.

sudurdarśamidaṃ rūpaṃ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama, devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṃ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.

    English

Lord Shri Krishna replied: It is hard to see this vision of Me that thou hast seen. Even the most powerful have longed for it in vain.

Krishna tells Arjuna that this form he has seen is exceedingly difficult to see, and even the gods constantly long to see it.

  53. Krishna

    11.53

nāhaṃ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā, śakya evaṃvidho draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭavānasi māṃ yathā.

    English

Not by study of the scriptures, or by austerities, not by gifts or sacrifices, is it possible to see Me as thou hast done.

Krishna says he cannot be seen in this form through the Vedas, austerity, charity, or sacrifice, in the way Arjuna has just seen him.

  54. Krishna

    11.54

bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya ahamevaṃvidho'rjuna, jñātuṃ dṛṣṭuṃ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṃ ca paraṃtapa.

    English

Only by tireless devotion can I be seen and known; only thus can a man become one with Me, O Arjuna!

Only through single-minded devotion can Krishna truly be known and seen in this way, and thereby entered into.

  55. Krishna

    11.55

matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ, nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava.

    English

He whose every action is done for My sake, to whom I am the final goal, who loves Me only and hates no one - O My dearest son, only he can realize Me!

Krishna declares that whoever acts for his sake, holds him as the highest goal, is devoted to him, free of attachment, and without hostility toward any being, attains him.

Sanskrit and named translations (Swami Ramsukhdas for Hindi, Shri Purohit Swami for English) sourced from the user-supplied bhagavad_gita_chapter_11.json (github.com/bhavykhatri/DharmicData, ODbL license), processed locally. Transliteration (IAST) generated with the indic_transliteration library and lightly reformatted; plain_summary composed for this repository. Three speakers appear (Arjuna, Krishna, and Sanjaya), all tagged inline in the source, including Sanjaya's narration passages (e.g. 11.9-11.14, 11.35, 11.50), so no manual speaker override was needed. One one-off OCR-style glitch in the source English translation of verse 11.27 ("1\tsee them" for "I see them") was corrected. The recurring vowel-sign transposition glitch was corrected via the same general regex used from Chapter 7 onward.
