Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā · Chapter 15 of 18

Purushottama YogaThe Yoga of the Supreme Being

Krishna describes the world as an inverted cosmic fig tree, roots above and branches below, whose true form cannot be grasped until cut down with the axe of detachment, revealing the path to a realm from which none return. He explains that every living being is an eternal fragment of himself, carrying the mind and senses from body to body like wind carrying fragrance. He describes his presence in the light of the sun, moon, and fire, in the digestive fire within every creature, and seated in the heart of all beings as the source of memory and knowledge. The chapter closes with Krishna's key distinction between the perishable (all created things), the imperishable (the unchanging self), and the Supreme Being beyond both -- Krishna himself -- concluding that one who understands this attains complete wisdom.

ūrdhvamūlamadhaḥśākhamaśvatthaṃ prāhuravyayam, chandāṃsi yasya parṇāni yastaṃ veda sa vedavit.

    English

Lord Shri Krishna continued: This phenomenal creation, which is both ephemeral and eternal, is like a tree, but having its seed above in the Highest and its ramifications on this earth below. The scriptures are its leaves, and he who understands this, knows.

Krishna describes the world as an eternal fig tree with roots above and branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns -- one who understands this tree truly knows the scriptures.

adhaścordhvaṃ prasṛtāstasya śākhā guṇapravṛddhā viṣayapravālāḥ, adhaśca mūlānyanusantatāni karmānubandhīni manuṣyaloke.

    English

Its branches shoot upwards and downwards, deriving their nourishment from the Qualities; its buds are the objects of sense; and its roots, which follow the Law causing man's regeneration and degeneration, pierce downwards into the soil.

Its branches spread up and down, nourished by the three qualities, its buds are the sense objects, and its roots extend downward, bound to action in the human world.

    15.3

na rūpamasyeha tathopalabhyate nānto na cādirna ca saṃpratiṣṭhā, aśvatthamenaṃ suvirūḍhamūla masaṅgaśastreṇa dṛḍhena chittvā.

    English

In this world its true form is not known, neither its origin nor its end, and its strength is not understood., until the tree with its roots striking deep into the earth is hewn down by the sharp axe of non-attachment.

This tree's true form cannot be perceived here -- neither its beginning, end, nor foundation; one must cut it down with the strong axe of detachment.

tataḥ padaṃ tatparimārgitavyam yasmingatā na nivartanti bhūyaḥ, tameva cādyaṃ puruṣaṃ prapadye yataḥ pravṛttiḥ prasṛtā purāṇī.

    English

Beyond lies the Path, from which, when found, there is no return. This is the Primal God from whence this ancient creation has sprung.

Then one should seek that place from which, once reached, there is no return, taking refuge in the primal being from whom this ancient creation flows.

    15.5

nirmānamohā jitasaṅgadoṣā adhyātmanityā vinivṛttakāmāḥ, dvandvairvimuktāḥ sukhaduḥkhasaṃjñai rgacchantyamūḍhāḥ padamavyayaṃ tat.

    English

The wise attain Eternity when, freed from pride and delusion, they have conquered their love for the things of sense; when, renouncing desire and fixing their gaze on the Self, they have ceased to be tossed to and fro by the opposing sensations, like pleasure and pain.

Free from pride and delusion, having conquered attachment, ever dwelling in the self, desires stilled, released from the dualities of pleasure and pain, the undeluded reach that eternal state.

    15.6

na tadbhāsayate sūryo na śaśāṅko na pāvakaḥ, yadgatvā na nivartante taddhāma paramaṃ mama.

    English

Neither sun, moon, nor fire shines there. Those who go thither never come back. For, O Arjuna, that is my Celestial Home!

That supreme abode is not illuminated by sun, moon, or fire; having reached it, none return -- this is Krishna's highest home.

  7. Krishna

    15.7

mamaivāṃśo jīvaloke jīvabhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ, manaḥṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛtisthāni karṣati.

    English

It is only a very small part of My Eternal Self, which is the life of the universe, drawing round itself the six senses, the mind the last, which have their source in Nature.

An eternal fragment of Krishna himself becomes the living being in this world, drawing to itself the mind and five senses which rest in material nature.

  8. Krishna

    15.8

śarīraṃ yadavāpnoti yaccāpyutkrāmatīśvaraḥ, gṛhītvaitāni saṃyāti vāyurgandhānivāśayāt.

    English

When the Supreme Lord enters a body or leaves it, He gathers these senses together and travels on with them, as the wind gathers perfume while passing through the flowers.

When the embodied self takes on or leaves a body, it carries these senses along, just as the wind carries fragrance from their source.

  9. Krishna

    15.9

śrotraṃ cakṣuḥ sparśanaṃ ca rasanaṃ ghrāṇameva ca, adhiṣṭhāya manaścāyaṃ viṣayānupasevate.

    English

He is the perception of the ear, the eye, the touch, the taste and the smell, yea and of the mind also; and the enjoyment the things which they perceive is also His.

Presiding over the ear, eye, touch, taste, smell, and mind, the self experiences the sense objects through them.

  10. Krishna

    15.10

utkrāmantaṃ sthitaṃ vāpi bhuñjānaṃ vā guṇānvitam, vimūḍhā nānupaśyanti paśyanti jñānacakṣuṣaḥ.

    English

The ignorant do not see that it is He Who is present in life and Who departs at death or even that it is He Who enjoys pleasure through the Qualities. Only the eye of wisdom sees.

The deluded do not see the self departing, remaining, or experiencing through the qualities, but those with the eye of wisdom do perceive it.

  11. Krishna

    15.11

yatanto yoginaścainaṃ paśyantyātmanyavasthitam, yatanto'pyakṛtātmāno nainaṃ paśyantyacetasaḥ.

    English

The saints with great effort find Him within themselves; but not the unintelligent, who in spite of every effort cannot control their minds.

Striving yogis see the self dwelling within themselves, but the undisciplined, though striving, do not perceive it, since their minds are not purified.

  12. Krishna

    15.12

    English

Remember that the Light which, proceeding from the sun, illumines the whole world, and the Light which is in the moon, and That which is in the fire also, all are born of Me.

  13. Krishna

    15.13

    English

I enter this world and animate all My creatures with My vitality; and by My cool moonbeams I nourish the plants.

Krishna, entering the earth, sustains all beings by his vital energy, and nourishes all plants by becoming the moon, rich in sap.

  14. Krishna

    15.14

    English

Becoming the fire of life, I pass into their bodies and, uniting with the vital streams of Prana and Apana, I digest the various kinds of food.

  15. Krishna

    15.15

sarvasya cāhaṃ hṛdi sanniviṣṭo mattaḥ smṛtirjñānamapohanaṃ ca, vedaiśca sarvairahameva vedyo vedāntakṛdvedavideva cāham.

    English

I am enthroned in the hearts of all; memory, wisdom and discrimination owe their origins to Me. I am He Who is to be realised in the scriptures; I inspire their wisdom and I know their truth.

Krishna is seated in the hearts of all; from him come memory, knowledge, and their loss; he alone is what is to be known through all the scriptures, and he is the author and knower of the Vedanta.

  16. Krishna

    15.16

dvāvimau puruṣau loke kṣaraścākṣara eva ca, kṣaraḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kūṭastho'kṣara ucyate.

    English

There are two aspects in Nature: the perishable and the imperishable. All life in this world belongs to the former, the unchanging element belongs to the latter.

There are two beings in this world: the perishable, comprising all created things, and the imperishable, the unchanging self.

  17. Krishna

    15.17

uttamaḥ puruṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhṛtaḥ, yo lokatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvaraḥ.

    English

But higher than all am I, the Supreme God, the Absolute Self, the Eternal Lord, Who pervades the worlds and upholds them all.

But distinct from both is the supreme being, called the highest self, who as the imperishable Lord pervades and sustains the three worlds.

  18. Krishna

    15.18

yasmātkṣaramatīto'hamakṣarādapi cottamaḥ, ato'smi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ.

    English

Beyond comparison of the Eternal with the non-eternal am I, Who am called by scriptures and sages the Supreme Personality, the Highest God.

Since Krishna transcends both the perishable and even the imperishable, he is celebrated in the world and the Vedas as the Supreme Being.

  19. Krishna

    15.19

yo māmevamasammūḍho jānāti puruṣottamam, sa sarvavidbhajati māṃ sarvabhāvena bhārata.

    English

He who with unclouded vision sees Me as the Lord-God, knows all there is to be known, and always shall worship Me with his whole heart.

One who, undeluded, knows Krishna thus as the Supreme Being, knows everything there is to know, and worships him with their whole being.

  20. Krishna

    15.20

iti guhyatamaṃ śāstramidamuktaṃ mayā'nagha, etadbuddhvā buddhimānsyātkṛtakṛtyaśca bhārata.

    English

Thus, O Sinless One, I have revealed to thee this most mystic knowledge. He who understands gains wisdom and attains the consummation of life.

Krishna declares he has revealed this most secret teaching; understanding it, one becomes truly wise, having accomplished all that needs to be done.

Sanskrit and named translations (Swami Ramsukhdas for Hindi, Shri Purohit Swami for English) sourced from the user-supplied bhagavad_gita_chapter_15.json (github.com/bhavykhatri/DharmicData, ODbL license), processed locally. Transliteration (IAST) generated with the indic_transliteration library and lightly reformatted; plain_summary composed for this repository. Like Chapters 12-14, this source file's formatting is inconsistent per verse; the same general prefix-based tag detection and auto-spacing fix was applied, plus collapsing of irregular multi-space runs found in a few verses (e.g. 15.2). Only Krishna speaks in this chapter (single inline tag at 15.1). One one-off OCR-style glitch in the source English translation of verse 15.13 ("1\tenter" for "I enter"), the same pattern seen in Chapter 11's verse 11.27, was corrected. The recurring vowel-sign transposition glitch was corrected via the same general regex used from Chapter 7 onward.
