Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā · Chapter 9 of 18

Raja Vidya Raja Guhya YogaThe Yoga of Sovereign Knowledge and Sovereign Secret

Krishna reveals what he calls the most confidential and sovereign knowledge: that he pervades the entire universe in unmanifest form, sustaining all beings without being confined within them, much as the wind, though everywhere, always remains within space. He contrasts those who disregard him, seeing only his human form, with the great souls who recognize his true nature and worship him single-mindedly. He describes himself as every element of ritual and sacrifice, as the source and dissolution of the universe, and explains that even simple offerings made with devotion -- a leaf, a flower, fruit, water -- are accepted by him. The chapter closes with Krishna's assurance that devotion to him is available to everyone regardless of background, and that his devotee is never lost.

    English

Lord Shri Krishna said: I will now reveal to thee, since thou doubtest not, that profound mysticism, which when followed by experience, shall liberate thee from sin.

Krishna says he will now reveal a profound, mystical knowledge to Arjuna, who is free of envy, which will free him from evil.

    English

This is the Premier Science, the Sovereign Secret, the Purest and Best; intuitional, righteous; and to him who practiseth it pleasant beyond measure.

This is the highest knowledge, the greatest secret, most pure, directly realizable, righteous, easy to practice, and everlasting.

    English

They who have no faith in this teaching cannot find Me, but remain lost in the purlieus of this perishable world.

Those without faith in this teaching do not attain Krishna; they remain trapped in the cycle of birth and death.

    9.4

mayā tatamidaṃ sarvaṃ jagadavyaktamūrtinā, matsthāni sarvabhūtāni na cāhaṃ teṣvavasthitaḥ.

    English

The whole world is pervaded by Me, yet My form is not seen. All living things have their being in Me, yet I am not limited by them.

The entire universe is pervaded by Krishna in his unmanifest form; all beings exist within him, yet he is not confined within them.

  5. Krishna

    9.5

    English

Nevertheless, they do not consciously abide in Me. Such is My Divine Sovereignty that though I, the Supreme Self, am the cause and upholder of all, yet I remain outside.

Beings do not truly dwell within Krishna either; his divine power sustains and creates all beings without him being contained in them.

  6. Krishna

    9.6

    English

As the mighty wind, though moving everywhere, has no resting place but space, so have all these beings no home but Me.

Just as the vast wind, moving everywhere, always remains within space, all beings likewise dwell within Krishna.

    English

All beings, O Arjuna, return at the close of every cosmic cycle into the realm of Nature, which is a part of Me, and at the beginning of the next I send them forth again.

At the end of a cosmic cycle, all beings dissolve into Krishna's material nature; at the start of the next, he sends them forth again.

  8. Krishna

    9.8

    English

With the help of Nature, again and again I pour forth the whole multitude of beings, whether they will or no, for they are ruled by My Will.

Krishna repeatedly creates this whole multitude of beings, again and again, controlling material nature, though they act without full control of their own.

  9. Krishna

    9.9

    English

But these acts of mine do not bind Me. I remain outside and unattached.

These actions do not bind Krishna, since he remains detached, as one unattached, observing from beyond.

  10. Krishna

    9.10

    English

Under my guidance, Nature produces all things movable and immovable. Thus it is, O Arjuna, that this universe revolves.

Under Krishna's oversight, material nature produces everything, animate and inanimate; through this, the universe continues to turn.

  11. Krishna

    9.11

    English

Fools disregard Me, seeing Me clad in human form. They know not that in My higher nature I am the Lord-God of all.

Fools disregard Krishna when he takes a human form, not knowing his higher nature as the supreme Lord of all beings.

  12. Krishna

    9.12

moghāśā moghakarmāṇo moghajñānā vicetasaḥ, rākṣasīmāsurīṃ caiva prakṛtiṃ mohinīṃ śritāḥ.

    English

Their hopes are vain, their actions worthless, their knowledge futile; they are without sense, deceitful, barbarous and godless.

    9.13

    English

But the Great Souls, O Arjuna! Filled with My Divine Spirit, they worship Me, they fix their minds on Me and on Me alone, for they know that I am the imperishable Source of being.

Great souls, however, taking refuge in the divine nature, worship Krishna single-mindedly, knowing him as the imperishable source of all beings.

  14. Krishna

    9.14

    English

Others worship Me with full consciousness as the One, the Manifold, the Omnipresent, the Universal.

Others worship Krishna through the sacrifice of knowledge, seeing him as one, as many, and in countless forms facing every direction.

    English

I am the Oblation, the Sacrifice and the Worship; I am the Fuel and the Chant, I am the Butter offered to the fire, I am the Fire itself, and I am the Act of offering.

Krishna says he is the ritual, the sacrifice, the offering to ancestors, the herb, the sacred chant, the clarified butter, the fire, and the act of offering itself.

    English

I am the Heat of the Sun, I release and hold back the Rains. I am Death and Immortality; I am Being and Not-Being.

Krishna gives heat as the sun, withholds and sends forth the rain; he is both immortality and death, and both being and non-being.

  20. Krishna

    9.20

traividyā māṃ somapāḥ pūtapāpā yajñairiṣṭvā svargatiṃ prārthayante, te puṇyamāsādya surendraloka maśnanti divyāndivi devabhogān.

    English

Those who are versed in the scriptures, who drink the mystic Soma-juice and are purified from sin, but who while worshipping Me with sacrifices pray that I will lead them to heaven; they reach the holy world where lives the Controller of the Powers of Nature, and they enjoy the feasts of Paradise.

Those learned in the three Vedas, who drink the sacred Soma and seek heaven through ritual sacrifice, reach the heavenly world and enjoy the pleasures of the gods.

  21. Krishna

    9.21

te taṃ bhuktvā svargalokaṃ viśālaṃ kṣīṇe puṇye martyalokaṃ viśanti, eva trayīdharmamanuprapannā gatāgataṃ kāmakāmā labhante.

    English

Yet although they enjoy the spacious glories of Paradise, nevertheless, when their merit is exhausted, they are born again into this world of mortals. They have followed the letter of the scriptures, yet because they have sought but to fulfill their own desires, they must depart and return again and again.

Having enjoyed that vast heavenly world, once their merit is exhausted, they return to the mortal world -- so those who follow ritual for personal gain go back and forth.

  22. Krishna

    9.22

    English

But if a man will meditate on Me and Me alone, and will worship Me always and everywhere, I will take upon Myself the fulfillment of his aspiration, and I will safeguard whatsoever he shall attain.

For those who worship Krishna alone with undivided devotion, constantly steadfast, Krishna personally provides for what they lack and preserves what they have.

  23. Krishna

    9.23

    English

Even those who worship the lesser Powers, if they do so with faith, they thereby worship Me, though not in the right way.

Even those who worship other deities with faith are, in truth, worshipping Krishna -- though not in the proper way.

  24. Krishna

    9.24

    English

I am the willing recipient of sacrifice, and I am its true Lord. But these do not know me in truth, and so they sink back.

  25. Krishna

    9.25

    English

The votaries of the lesser Powers go to them; the devotees of spirits go to them; they who worship the Powers of Darkness, to such Powers shall they go; and so, too, those who worship Me shall come to Me.

Worshippers of the gods go to the gods, worshippers of ancestors go to the ancestors, worshippers of spirits go to spirits, and those who worship Krishna come to Krishna.

  26. Krishna

    9.26

    English

Whatever a man offers to Me, whether it be a leaf, or a flower, or fruit, or water, I accept it, for it is offered with devotion and purity of mind.

Whoever offers Krishna a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water with devotion, Krishna accepts that offering from the pure-hearted devotee.

  27. Krishna

    9.27

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer in sacrifice, whatever you give away, whatever austerity you practice -- do it all as an offering to Krishna.

  28. Krishna

    9.28

    English

So shall thy action be attended by no result, either good or bad; but through the spirit of renunciation thou shalt come to Me and be free.

In this way you will be freed from the bondage of action and its results, whether good or bad, and through renunciation you will attain Krishna.

    9.29

    English

I am the same to all beings. I favour none, and I hate none. But those who worship Me devotedly, they live in Me, and I in them.

Krishna is equally present in all beings; none is hateful to him, none is dear above others -- but those who worship him with devotion dwell in him, and he in them.

  30. Krishna

    9.30

api cetsudurācāro bhajate māmananyabhāk, sādhureva sa mantavyaḥ samyagvyavasito hi saḥ.

    English

Even the most sinful, if he worship Me with his whole heart, shalt be considered righteous, for he is treading the right path.

Even one of poor conduct, if devoted to Krishna with unwavering focus, should be considered righteous, for their resolve is rightly placed.

  31. Krishna

    9.31

kṣipraṃ bhavati dharmātmā śaśvacchāntiṃ nigacchati, kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati.

    English

He shall attain spirituality ere long, and Eternal Peace shall be his. O Arjuna! Believe me, My devotee is never lost.

Such a person soon becomes righteous and attains lasting peace; Krishna declares plainly that his devotee is never lost.

  32. Krishna

    9.32

māṃ hi pārtha vyapāśritya ye'pi syuḥ pāpayonayaḥ, striyo vaiśyāstathā śūdrāste'pi yānti parāṃ gatim.

    English

For even the children of sinful parents, and those miscalled the weaker sex, and merchants, and labourers, if only they will make Me their refuge, they shall attain the Highest.

Krishna says that all who take refuge in him -- regardless of birth, social standing, or gender -- attain the highest goal without doubt.

  33. Krishna

    9.33

kiṃ punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayastathā, anityamasukhaṃ lokamimaṃ prāpya bhajasva mām.

    English

What need then to mention the holy Ministers of God, the devotees and the saintly rulers? Do thou, therefore, born in this changing and miserable world, do thou too worship Me.

How much more easily, then, do virtuous priests and devoted, righteous rulers attain it -- so Arjuna, born into this transient world of sorrow, should worship Krishna too.

  34. Krishna

    9.34

manmanā bhava madbhakto madyājī māṃ namaskuru, māmevaiṣyasi yuktvaivamātmānaṃ matparāyaṇaḥ.

    English

Fix thy mind on Me, devote thyself to Me, sacrifice for Me, surrender to Me, make Me the object of thy aspirations, and thou shalt assuredly become one with Me, Who am thine own Self.

Krishna urges Arjuna to fix his mind on him, become devoted to him, offer worship to him, bow to him -- and by disciplining himself this way, he will come to Krishna.

Sanskrit and named translations (Swami Ramsukhdas for Hindi, Shri Purohit Swami for English) sourced from the user-supplied bhagavad_gita_chapter_9.json (github.com/bhavykhatri/DharmicData, ODbL license), processed locally. Transliteration (IAST) generated with the indic_transliteration library and lightly reformatted; plain_summary composed for this repository. Only Krishna speaks in this chapter (single inline tag at 9.1). Content note: the source's English translation of verse 9.32 (Shri Purohit Swami, 1935) renders the Sanskrit स्त्रियः ("women") as "the weaker sex" -- dated, gender-insensitive phrasing not present in the Sanskrit itself or in the Hindi translation, both of which simply say "women." The direct quote is preserved as-is for citation accuracy, but this repository's own plain_summary for 9.32 uses neutral, non-stereotyping language instead.
