Jnana Vijnana YogaThe Yoga of Knowledge and Wisdom

Krishna promises to reveal complete knowledge of himself, describing his lower nature (the eight material elements) and his higher nature (the life-force sustaining all beings). He declares himself present in the finest essence of every element -- taste in water, light in sun and moon, sound in space -- and the origin from which the universe arises and into which it dissolves. He explains why most people, deluded by the three qualities of nature, fail to recognize him, while four types of virtuous seekers turn to him, the wise devotee being dearest of all. The chapter closes on Krishna's assurance that those who take refuge in him, understanding his presence in all beings and in the cosmic order, remain steady even at the moment of death.

    English

I will reveal to this knowledge unto thee, and how it may be realised; which, once accomplished, there remains nothing else worth having in this life.

    English

Among thousands of men scarcely one strives for perfection, and even amongst those who gain occult powers, perchance but one knows me in truth.

Among thousands of people, scarcely one strives for perfection, and among those who strive, scarcely one truly knows Krishna.

    English

Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect and personality; this is the eightfold division of My Manifested Nature.

Krishna names his eightfold lower nature: earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intellect, and ego.

  5. Krishna

    English

This is My inferior Nature; but distinct from this, O Valiant One, know thou that my Superior Nature is the very Life which sustains the universe.

    English

It is the womb of all being; for I am He by Whom the worlds were created and shall be dissolved.

All beings arise from this union of natures; Krishna is the origin and the dissolution of the entire universe.

  7. Krishna

    7.7

    English

O Arjuna! There is nothing higher than Me; all is strung upon Me as rows of pearls upon a thread.

Krishna says nothing exists higher than him; everything is strung on him like pearls on a thread.

    English

O Arjuna! I am the Fluidity in water, the Light in the sun and in the moon. I am the mystic syllable Om in the Vedic scriptures, the Sound in ether, the Virility in man.

Krishna is the taste in water, the light in sun and moon, the sacred syllable Om, the sound in space, and manliness in men.

  9. Krishna

    English

I am the Fragrance of earth, the Brilliance of fire. I am the Life Force in all beings, and I am the Austerity of the ascetics.

Krishna is the pure fragrance of earth, the brilliance of fire, the life in all beings, and the austerity of ascetics.

  10. Krishna

    7.10

    English

Know, O Arjuna, that I am the eternal Seed of being; I am the Intelligence of the intelligent, the Splendour of the resplendent.

Krishna is the eternal seed of all beings, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the splendor of the splendid.

  11. Krishna

    7.11

balaṃ balavatāṃ cāhaṃ kāmarāgavivarjitam, dharmāviruddho bhūteṣu kāmo'smi bharatarṣabha.

    English

I am the Strength of the strong, of them who are free from attachment and desire; and, O Arjuna, I am the Desire for righteousness.

Krishna is the strength of the strong free from desire and attachment, and desire itself when aligned with righteousness.

  12. Krishna

    7.12

ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye, matta eveti tānviddhi natvahaṃ teṣu te mayi.

    English

Whatever be the nature of their life, whether it be pure or passionate or ignorant, they are all derived from Me. They are in Me, but I am not in them.

All states of being -- pure, passionate, or dull -- arise from Krishna's nature, yet he is not contained within them.

  13. Krishna

    7.13

tribhirguṇamayairbhāvairebhiḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat, mohitaṃ nābhijānāti māmebhyaḥ paramavyayam.

    English

The inhabitants of the world, misled by those natures which the Qualities have engendered, know not that I am higher than them all, and that I do not change.

Deluded by these three qualities, the world fails to recognize Krishna, who is imperishable and beyond them.

  14. Krishna

    7.14

daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī mama māyā duratyayā, māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṃ taranti te.

    English

Verily, this Divine Illusion of Phenomenon manifesting itself in the Qualities is difficult to surmount. Only they who devote themselves to Me and to Me alone can accomplish it.

This divine illusion made of the three qualities is hard to overcome, but those who take refuge in Krishna cross beyond it.

  15. Krishna

    7.15

na māṃ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ, māyayāpahṛtajñānā āsuraṃ bhāvamāśritāḥ.

    English

The sinner, the ignorant, the vile, deprived of spiritual perception by the glamour of Illusion, and he who pursues a godless life - none of them shall find Me.

The wicked, the deluded, the lowest of people, whose wisdom is stolen by illusion, do not surrender to Krishna.

  16. Krishna

    7.16

caturvidhā bhajante māṃ janāḥ sukṛtino'rjuna, ārto jijñāsurarthārthī jñānī ca bharatarṣabha.

    English

O Arjuna! The righteous who worship Me are grouped by stages: first, they who suffer, next they who desire knowledge, then they who thirst after truth, and lastly they who attain wisdom.

Four kinds of virtuous people worship Krishna: the distressed, the seeker of knowledge, the seeker of wealth, and the wise.

  17. Krishna

    7.17

teṣāṃ jñānī nityayukta ekabhaktirviśiṣyate, priyo hi jñānino'tyarthamahaṃ sa ca mama priyaḥ.

    English

Of all of these, he who has gained wisdom, who meditates on Me without ceasing, devoting himself only to Me, he is the best; for by the wise man I am exceedingly beloved and the wise man, too, is beloved by Me.

Among these, the wise devotee, ever united and single-mindedly devoted, is the best -- dear to Krishna, and Krishna dear to him.

  18. Krishna

    7.18

udārāḥ sarva evaite jñānī tvātmaiva me matam, āsthitaḥ sa hi yuktātmā māmevānuttamāṃ gatim.

    English

Noble-minded are they all, but the wise man I hold as my own Self; for he, remaining always at peace with Me, makes me his final goal.

All these devotees are noble, but the wise one is Krishna's very self, since such a devotee, steadfast, reaches Krishna as the highest goal.

  19. Krishna

    7.19

bahūnāṃ janmanāmante jñānavānmāṃ prapadyate, vāsudevaḥ sarvamiti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ.

    English

After many lives, at last the wise man realises Me as I am. A man so enlightened that he sees God everywhere is very difficult to find.

After many lifetimes, the wise one attains Krishna, realizing that Krishna is everything -- such a great soul is very rare.

  20. Krishna

    7.20

kāmaistaistairhṛtajñānāḥ prapadyante'nyadevatāḥ, taṃ taṃ niyamamāsthāya prakṛtyā niyatāḥ svayā.

    English

They in whom wisdom is obscured by one desire or the other, worship the lesser Powers, practising many rites which vary according to their temperaments.

Those whose wisdom is carried away by various desires turn to other deities, following rites shaped by their own natures.

  21. Krishna

    7.21

yo yo yāṃ yāṃ tanuṃ bhaktaḥ śraddhayārcitumicchati, tasya tasyācalāṃ śraddhāṃ tāmeva vidadhāmyaham.

    English

But whatever the form of worship, if the devotee have faith, then upon his faith in that worship do I set My own seal.

Whatever form a devotee seeks to worship with faith, Krishna makes that very faith steady.

  22. Krishna

    7.22

sa tayā śraddhayā yuktastasyārādhanamīhate, labhate ca tataḥ kāmānmayaiva vihitān hi tān.

    English

If he worships one form alone with real faith, then shall his desires be fulfilled through that only; for thus have I ordained.

Endowed with that faith, the devotee seeks to please that deity and obtains the desired results, which are in truth granted by Krishna alone.

  23. Krishna

    7.23

antavattu phalaṃ teṣāṃ tadbhavatyalpamedhasām, devāndevayajo yānti madbhaktā yānti māmapi.

    English

The fruit that comes to men of limited insight is, after all, finite. They who worship the Lower Powers attain them; but those who worship Me come unto Me alone.

But the rewards gained by those of limited understanding are temporary; those who worship Krishna attain Krishna himself.

  24. Krishna

    7.24

avyaktaṃ vyaktimāpannaṃ manyante māmabuddhayaḥ, paraṃ bhāvamajānanto mamāvyayamanuttamam.

    English

The ignorant think of Me, who am the Unmanifested Spirit, as if I were really in human form. They do not understand that My Superior Nature is changeless and most excellent.

The unwise think of Krishna, the unmanifest, as having taken on a limited manifest form, not knowing his supreme, imperishable, unsurpassed nature.

  25. Krishna

    7.25

nāhaṃ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ, mūḍho'yaṃ nābhijānāti loko māmajamavyayam.

    English

I am not visible to all, for I am enveloped by the illusion of Phenomenon. This deluded world does not know Me as the Unborn and the Imperishable.

Krishna, veiled by his own divine illusion, is not revealed to everyone; the deluded world does not recognize him as unborn and imperishable.

  26. Krishna

    7.26

vedāhaṃ samatītāni vartamānāni cārjuna, bhaviṣyāṇi ca bhūtāni māṃ tu veda na kaścana.

    English

I know, O Arjuna, all beings in the past, the present and the future; but they do not know Me.

Krishna knows all beings of the past, present, and future, but no one truly knows Krishna.

  27. Krishna

    7.27

icchādveṣasamutthena dvandvamohena bhārata, sarvabhūtāni saṃmohaṃ sarge yānti parantapa.

    English

O brave Arjuna! Man lives in a fairy world, deceived by the glamour of opposite sensations, infatuated by desire and aversion.

All beings are born into delusion, confused by the duality arising from desire and aversion.

  28. Krishna

    7.28

yeṣāṃ tvantagataṃ pāpaṃ janānāṃ puṇyakarmaṇām, te dvandvamohanirmuktā bhajante māṃ dṛḍhavratāḥ.

    English

But those who act righteously, in whom sin has been destroyed, who are free from the infatuation of the conflicting emotions, they worship Me with firm resolution.

But those of pure deeds, whose sin has ended, freed from the delusion of dualities, worship Krishna with firm resolve.

  29. Krishna

    7.29

jarāmaraṇamokṣāya māmāśritya yatanti ye, te brahma tadviduḥ kṛtsnamadhyātmaṃ karma cākhilam.

    English

Those who make Me their refuge, who strive for liberation from decay and Death, they realise the Supreme Spirit, which is their own real Self, and in which all action finds its consummation.

Those who strive for liberation from old age and death, taking refuge in Krishna, come to know Brahman fully, including all action.

  30. Krishna

    7.30

sādhibhūtādhidaivaṃ māṃ sādhiyajñaṃ ca ye viduḥ, prayāṇakāle'pi ca māṃ te viduryuktacetasaḥ.

    English

Those who see Me in the life of the world, in the universal sacrifice, and as pure Divinity, keeping their minds steady, they live in Me, even in the crucial hour of death.

Those who know Krishna as present in all beings, in the cosmic sacrifice, and in the divine, remain steady in that awareness even at the hour of death.

Transliteration (IAST) generated with the indic_transliteration library and lightly reformatted; plain_summary composed for this repository. Only Krishna speaks in this chapter (single inline tag at 7.1). The recurring source-text encoding glitch (a misplaced 'ि' vowel sign after a halant, e.g. क्ित -> क्ति) was corrected via a general regex rather than a one-off string fix, since this pattern is never valid Devanagari.
