Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā · Chapter 5 of 18
Karma Sanyasa Yoga — The Yoga of Renunciation of Action
Arjuna asks Krishna to settle a seeming contradiction: should he renounce action or perform it? Krishna answers that both paths lead to the same highest good, but disciplined action is easier and ultimately identical in result to the path of knowledge. He describes the person who acts without attachment as untouched by sin, like a lotus leaf untouched by water, and explains that true renunciation is internal -- a state of equanimity toward all beings, pleasure and pain, praise and blame -- rather than mere physical withdrawal from action. The chapter closes with the sage who has mastered the senses and mind, fixed in meditation, attaining lasting peace in Krishna as the friend and Lord of all beings.

English
Arjuna said: My Lord! At one moment Thou praisest renunciation of action; at another, right action. Tell me truly, I pray, which of these is the more conducive to my highest welfare?
Arjuna asks Krishna to clarify: is renunciation of action or engaged right action the better path to the highest good?

saṃnyāsaḥ karmayogaśca niḥśreyasakarāvubhau, tayostu karmasaṃnyāsātkarmayogo viśiṣyate.
English
Lord Shri Krishna replied: Renunciation of action and the path of right action both lead to the highest; of the two, right action is the better.
Krishna says both renunciation and right action lead to the highest, but right action is the better of the two.

English
He is a true ascetic who never desires or dislikes, who is uninfluenced by the opposites and is easily freed from bondage.
The true renunciant neither desires nor hates anything, and being free of these opposites, is easily released from bondage.

5.4
sāṃkhyayogau pṛthagbālāḥ pravadanti na paṇḍitāḥ, ekamapyāsthitaḥ samyagubhayorvindate phalam.
English
Only the unenlightened speak of wisdom and right action as separate, not the wise. If any man knows one, he enjoys the fruit of both.
Only the immature see knowledge (Sankhya) and action (Yoga) as different; one who truly knows either gains the fruit of both.
Krishna
5.5
yatsāṃkhyaiḥ prāpyate sthānaṃ tadyogairapi gamyate, ekaṃ sāṃkhyaṃ ca yogaṃ ca yaḥ paśyati sa paśyati.
English
The level which is reached by wisdom is attained through right action as well. He who perceives that the two are one, knows the truth.
The state reached through knowledge is the same state reached through action; one who sees this sees truly.

saṃnyāsastu mahābāho duḥkhamāptumayogataḥ, yogayukto munirbrahma nacireṇādhigacchati.
English
Without concentration, O Mighty Man, renunciation is difficult. But the sage who is always meditating on the Divine, before long shall attain the Absolute.
Renunciation without practicing yoga is hard to attain, but the sage disciplined in yoga soon reaches Brahman.

English
He who is spiritual, who is pure, who has overcome his senses and his personal self, who has realised his highest Self as the Self of all, such a one, even though he acts, is not bound by his acts.
One disciplined in yoga, pure in self, with senses conquered, seeing the self in all beings, is untainted even while acting.

English
Though the saint sees, hears, touches, smells, eats, moves, sleeps and breathes, yet he knows the Truth, and he knows that it is not he who acts.
The knower of truth understands that in seeing, hearing, touching, and all such acts, it is only the senses moving among their objects, not the self acting.

English
Though he talks, though he gives and receives, though he opens his eyes and shuts them, he still knows that his senses are merely disporting themselves among the objects of perception.
Even while speaking, giving, receiving, opening and closing the eyes, the wise hold this understanding, seeing it is the senses that act.

English
He who dedicates his actions to the Spirit, without any personal attachment to them, he is no more tainted by sin than the water lily is wetted by water.
One who acts, offering all action to Brahman and abandoning attachment, is untouched by sin, like a lotus leaf untouched by water.

Yogis act with body, mind, intellect, and even the senses alone, without attachment, purely for self-purification.

English
Having abandoned the fruit of action, he wins eternal peace. Others unacquainted with spirituality, led by desire and clinging to the benefit which they think will follow their actions, become entangled in them.
The disciplined soul, giving up the fruit of action, attains lasting peace; the undisciplined, driven by desire and attachment to results, remains bound.
Krishna

English
Mentally renouncing all actions, the self-controlled soul enjoys bliss in this body, the city of the nine gates, neither doing anything himself nor causing anything to be done.
The self-controlled person, mentally renouncing all actions, dwells at ease within the body's nine gates, neither acting nor causing action.
