Akshara Brahma YogaThe Yoga of the Imperishable Brahman

अक्षरब्रह्मयोगः

Arjuna asks Krishna to define several terms: Brahman, the individual self, action, the material realm, the divine realm, and how one comes to know Krishna at the moment of death. Krishna answers each in turn, then explains the pivotal teaching that whatever a person dwells on at the moment of death determines the state they attain next -- so one should remember Krishna constantly, even while acting in the world. He describes the meditative practice of concentrating the life-force and uttering the syllable Om at the time of death, and contrasts the temporary worlds of rebirth with the imperishable state beyond them, reached only through single-minded devotion. The chapter closes by naming the two paths souls may take after death -- one leading to no return, the other back to rebirth -- and their calendrical and symbolic markers.

The Lord Shri Krishna replied: The Supreme Spirit is the Highest Imperishable Self, and Its Nature is spiritual consciousness. The worlds have been created and are supported by an emanation from the Spirit which is called the Law.

Krishna explains: Brahman is the imperishable supreme; the individual self is one's own essential nature; action is the creative force producing all beings.

    English

Now I will tell thee, O Arjuna, of the times at which, if the mystics go forth, they do not return, and at which they go forth only to return.

Krishna now describes the times of departure at which yogis, having left the body, either do not return or do return to this world.

    English

If knowing the Supreme Spirit the sage goes forth with fire and light, in the daytime, in the fortnight of the waxing moon and in the six months before the Northern summer solstice, he will attain the Supreme.

Those who depart amid fire, light, daytime, the bright fortnight, and the six months of the sun's northward course reach Brahman -- knowers of Brahman go by this path.

    English

These bright and dark paths out of the world have always existed. Whoso takes the former, returns not; he who chooses the latter, returns.

These two paths, the bright and the dark, are considered the world's eternal paths; by one, a person does not return, and by the other, they return.

    English

O Arjuna! The saint knowing these paths is not confused. Therefore meditate perpetually.

No yogi who knows these two paths is ever deluded; therefore, Arjuna, remain steadfast in yoga at all times.

  28. Krishna

    8.28

The yogi who knows this attains a merit surpassing all the rewards promised by scripture, sacrifice, austerity, and charity, and reaches the supreme, primal abode.

Sanskrit and named translations (Swami Ramsukhdas for Hindi, Shri Purohit Swami for English) sourced from the user-supplied bhagavad_gita_chapter_8.json (github.com/bhavykhatri/DharmicData, ODbL license), processed locally. Transliteration (IAST) generated with the indic_transliteration library and lightly reformatted; plain_summary composed for this repository. The source's English translation field for verse 8.22 contained an editorial aside in square brackets (a note questioning whether 8.23-8.26 might be a later interpolation), wrapped around asterisk markers on 8.23 and 8.26; this aside and the stray asterisks were stripped, and 8.23-8.26 are presented here as ordinary verses like the rest of the chapter. The recurring source-text vowel-sign transposition glitch was corrected via the same general regex used from Chapter 7 onward.
