Sankhya YogaThe Yoga of Knowledge ("Of Doctrines")

On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna has just told Krishna he will not fight (end of Chapter 1). In Chapter 2, Krishna begins his teaching: the eternal nature of the soul, the duty of a warrior, the discipline of desireless action (karma yoga), and the description of a person of steady wisdom (sthitaprajna). This chapter contains many of the Gita's most quoted verses, including 2.20 (the soul is never born nor dies) and 2.47 (you have a right to action, never to its fruits).

    English

Sanjaya said: To Arjuna, overwhelmed with pity, his eyes filled with tears of anguish, Madhusudana (Krishna) spoke these words.

Sanjaya narrates: Krishna speaks to the grief-stricken Arjuna.

Shri Bhagavan uvacha: kutas tva kashmalam idam vishame samupasthitam, anarya-jushtam asvargyam akirti-karam Arjuna.

    English

The Blessed Lord said: From where has this despondency come to you in this difficult hour, Arjuna? It is unworthy of the noble, leads not to heaven, and brings only disgrace.

Krishna asks Arjuna where this uncharacteristic despair has come from.

  3. Krishna

    2.3

Klaibyam ma sma gamah Partha naitat tvayi upapadyate, kshudram hridaya-daurbalyam tyaktva uttishtha Parantapa.

    English

Do not yield to unmanliness, Partha; it does not befit you. Cast off this petty weakness of heart and arise, O scorcher of foes!

Krishna urges Arjuna to shed weakness and rise to fight.

  4. Arjuna

    2.4

Arjuna uvacha: katham Bhishmam aham sankhye Dronam cha Madhusudana, ishubhih pratiyotsyami pujarhav ari-sudana.

    English

Arjuna said: How can I, O Madhusudana, fight with arrows in battle against Bhishma and Drona, who are worthy of my worship, O destroyer of enemies?

Arjuna asks how he can fight against his revered elders Bhishma and Drona.

  5. Arjuna

    2.5

Gurun ahatva hi mahanubhavan shreyo bhoktum bhaikshyam api iha loke, hatva artha-kaman tu gurun ihaiva bhunjiya bhogan rudhira-pradigdhan.

    English

It is better to live on alms in this world than to slay these noble elders; even if I kill them for the sake of wealth and pleasure, those enjoyments would be smeared with blood.

Arjuna says he'd rather live as a beggar than kill his teachers for worldly gain.

  6. Arjuna

    2.6

Na chaitad vidmah kataran no gariyo yad va jayema yadi va no jayeyuh, yan eva hatva na jijivishamas te 'vasthitah pramukhe Dhartarashtrah.

    English

Nor do we know which is better - to conquer or be conquered. The sons of Dhritarashtra, whom if we killed we should not wish to live, stand arrayed before us.

Arjuna is unsure whether fighting or not fighting is the better path.

  7. Arjuna

    2.7

Karpanya-doshopahata-svabhavah, pricchami tvam dharma-sammudha-chetah, yac chreyah syan nishchitam bruhi tan me, shishyas te 'ham shadhi mam tvam prapannam.

    English

My very being is overcome by weak faintheartedness; my mind is confused about duty. I ask you - tell me decisively what is good for me. I am your disciple; teach me, for I have taken refuge in you.

Arjuna surrenders to Krishna as a student, asking to be shown the right path.

  8. Arjuna

    2.8

Na hi prapashyami mama apanudyad yac chokam ucchoshanam indriyanam, avapya bhumav asapatnam riddham rajyam suranam api cha adhipatyam.

    English

I see nothing that could dispel this grief that withers my senses, even if I gained a prosperous, unrivalled kingdom on earth, or even lordship over the gods.

Arjuna says no worldly gain, not even a kingdom, could relieve his grief.

  9. Sanjaya

    2.9

Sanjaya uvacha: Evam uktva Hrishikesham Gudakeshah Parantapah, na yotsya iti Govindam uktva tushnim babhuva ha.

    English

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus to Hrishikesha, Gudakesha (Arjuna), the scorcher of foes, said 'I will not fight,' and fell silent.

Sanjaya notes that Arjuna declares he won't fight, then falls silent.

  10. Sanjaya

    2.10

Tam uvacha Hrishikeshah prahasann iva Bharata, senayor ubhayor madhye vishidantam idam vachah.

    English

O Bharata, to him who was despondent between the two armies, Hrishikesha, as if smiling, spoke these words.

Krishna, almost smiling, begins to speak to the grieving Arjuna.

  11. Krishna

    2.11

    English

The Blessed Lord said: You grieve for those who should not be grieved for, yet you speak words of wisdom. The wise grieve neither for the living nor for the dead.

Krishna begins his teaching: true wisdom does not grieve over life or death.

  12. Krishna

    2.12

Na tv eva aham jatu nasam na tvam neme janadhipah, na chaiva na bhavishyamah sarve vayam atah param.

    English

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor these kings; nor shall any of us ever cease to be in the future.

The soul has always existed and always will — for Krishna, Arjuna, and all beings.

  13. Krishna

    2.13

Dehino 'smin yatha dehe kaumaram yauvanam jara, tatha dehantara-praptir dhiras tatra na muhyati.

    English

Just as the embodied soul passes through childhood, youth, and old age in this body, so too it passes into another body. The wise are not deluded by this.

The soul moves through different bodies just as it moves through different life stages.

  14. Krishna

    2.14

Matra-sparshas tu Kaunteya shitoshna-sukha-duhkha-dah, agamapayino 'nityas tams titikshasva Bharata.

    English

O Kaunteya, the contacts of the senses with their objects give rise to heat and cold, pleasure and pain. They come and go, being impermanent - endure them, Bharata.

Sensory experiences of pleasure and pain are temporary; Arjuna should learn to bear them.

  15. Krishna

    2.15

Yam hi na vyathayanty ete purusham purusharshabha, sama-duhkha-sukham dhiram so 'mritatvaya kalpate.

    English

The wise one whom these do not disturb, who remains steady in pleasure and pain, becomes fit for immortality.

One unshaken by pleasure and pain becomes fit for liberation.

  16. Krishna

    2.16

Nasato vidyate bhavo nabhavo vidyate satah, ubhayor api drishto 'ntas tv anayos tattva-darshibhih.

    English

The unreal has no being; the real never ceases to be. The seers of truth have concluded this, having seen the nature of both.

The unreal never truly exists; the real never ceases — the essence of truth.

  17. Krishna

    2.17

Avinashi tu tad viddhi yena sarvam idam tatam, vinasham avyayasyasya na kashchit kartum arhati.

    English

Know that to be indestructible by which all this is pervaded. No one can cause the destruction of this imperishable being.

The essence pervading all existence is indestructible.

  18. Krishna

    2.18

Antavanta ime deha nityasyoktah sharirinah, anashino 'prameyasya tasmad yudhyasva Bharata.

    English

These bodies of the eternal, indestructible, immeasurable soul are said to have an end. Therefore, fight, O Bharata.

Only the body dies; the soul is eternal — so Arjuna should fight.

  19. Krishna

    2.19

    English

Whoever thinks this self a slayer, and whoever thinks it slain, both fail to understand; it does not slay, nor is it slain.

The soul neither kills nor is killed — those who think so are mistaken.

  20. Krishna

    2.20

Na jayate mriyate va kadachin nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah, ajo nityah shashvato 'yam purano na hanyate hanyamane sharire.

    English

The soul is never born, nor does it ever die; nor, having been, will it ever cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, everlasting, and primeval; it is not slain when the body is slain.

The most famous verse: the soul is unborn, eternal, and never dies with the body.

  21. Krishna

    2.21

Vedavinashinam nityam ya enam ajam avyayam, katham sa purushah Partha kam ghatayati hanti kam.

    English

Whoever knows this self to be indestructible, eternal, unborn, and imperishable - how can that person cause anyone to be slain, or slay anyone, Partha?

Understanding the soul's eternal nature, how can one truly kill or cause killing?

  22. Krishna

    2.22

Vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya navani grihnati naro 'parani, tatha sharirani vihaya jirnany anyani samyati navani dehi.

    English

Just as a person casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so the embodied soul casts off worn-out bodies and enters others that are new.

The soul changes bodies the way a person changes clothes.

  23. Krishna

    2.23

Nainam chindanti shastrani nainam dahati pavakah, na chainam kledayanty apo na shoshayati marutah.

    English

Weapons do not cut this self, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, and wind does not dry it.

The soul cannot be cut, burned, wetted, or dried — it is beyond physical harm.

  24. Krishna

    2.24

Achchhedyo 'yam adahyo 'yam akledyo 'shoshya eva cha, nityah sarva-gatah sthanur achalo 'yam sanatanah.

    English

This self is uncuttable, unburnable, unwettable, and undryable; it is eternal, all-pervading, stable, immovable, and everlasting.

The soul is unchanging, eternal, and pervades everything.

  25. Krishna

    2.25

Avyakto 'yam achintyo 'yam avikaryo 'yam uchyate, tasmad evam viditvainam na anushochitum arhasi.

    English

This self is said to be unmanifest, inconceivable, and unchangeable. Knowing this, you should not grieve.

The soul is beyond perception and unchanging — no reason to grieve.

  26. Krishna

    2.26

Atha chainam nitya-jatam nityam va manyase mritam, tathapi tvam maha-baho naivam shochitum arhasi.

    English

Even if you consider the self to be constantly born and constantly dying, still, O mighty-armed one, you should not grieve.

Even by the ordinary view of birth and death, there's no cause for grief.

  27. Krishna

    2.27

Jatasya hi dhruvo mrityur dhruvam janma mritasya cha, tasmad aparihaarye 'rthe na tvam shochitum arhasi.

    English

Death is certain for the born, and birth is certain for the dead. Therefore, you should not grieve over what is unavoidable.

Birth and death are certain and unavoidable — grieving is pointless.

  28. Krishna

    2.28

Avyaktadini bhutani vyakta-madhyani Bharata, avyakta-nidhanany eva tatra ka paridevana.

    English

Beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in their middle state, and unmanifest again in their end, O Bharata. What is there to lament in this?

All beings are unseen before birth and after death — so why mourn the middle, visible part?

  29. Krishna

    2.29

Ashcharya-vat pashyati kashchid enam ashcharya-vad vadati tathaiva chanyah, ashcharya-vach chainam anyah shrinoti shrutvapy enam veda na chaiva kashchit.

    English

Some perceive this self as a wonder, some speak of it as a wonder, and others hear of it as a wonder; yet, even having heard, no one truly understands it.

The soul is a mystery — seen, described, and heard of with wonder, yet rarely truly understood.

  30. Krishna

    2.30

    English

This indweller in the body of everyone is eternally indestructible, O Bharata. Therefore you should not grieve for any being.

Since the soul in every being is eternally indestructible, there is nothing to mourn.

  31. Krishna

    2.31

Svadharmam api chavekshya na vikampitum arhasi, dharmyaddhi yuddhach chhreyo 'nyat kshatriyasya na vidyate.

    English

Considering your own duty, you should not waver; for a warrior, there is nothing better than a righteous war.

As a warrior, fighting for righteousness is Arjuna's highest duty.

  32. Krishna

    2.32

Yadrichchhaya chopapannam svarga-dvaram apavritam, sukhinah kshatriyah Partha labhante yuddham idrisham.

    English

Happy are the warriors, O Partha, who find such a battle coming to them unsought, opening the gate to heaven.

A righteous battle like this is a rare, fortunate opportunity for a warrior.

  33. Krishna

    2.33

Atha chet tvam imam dharmyam sangramam na karishyasi, tatah svadharmam kirtim cha hitva papam avapsyasi.

    English

But if you do not wage this righteous war, then, having abandoned your own duty and honor, you shall incur sin.

Refusing to fight this righteous war would mean failing his duty and incurring sin.

  34. Krishna

Akirtim chapi bhutani kathayishyanti te 'vyayam, sambhavitasya chakirtir maranad atirichyate.

    English

People will speak of your everlasting disgrace, and for one who has been honored, dishonor is worse than death.

Refusing to fight would bring Arjuna lasting disgrace, worse than death for a man of honor.

  35. Krishna

    2.35

Bhayad ranad uparatam mamsyante tvam maha-rathah, yesham cha tvam bahu-mato bhutva yasyasi laghavam.

    English

The great warriors will think you withdrew from battle out of fear, and you, once held in high esteem by them, will be regarded lightly.

Great warriors will assume Arjuna fled out of fear, losing their respect.

  36. Krishna

    2.36

Avachya-vadams cha bahun vadishyanti tavahitah, nindantas tava samarthyam tato duhkhataram nu kim.

    English

Your enemies will speak many unspeakable words, ridiculing your ability. What could be more painful than that?

His enemies would mock and insult his ability, causing deep humiliation.

  37. Krishna

    2.37

Hato va prapsyasi svargam jitva va bhokshyase mahim, tasmad uttishtha Kaunteya yuddhaya krita-nishchayah.

    English

If slain, you shall attain heaven; if victorious, you shall enjoy the earth. Therefore arise, O son of Kunti, resolved to fight.

Either way — victory or death — the outcome is honorable, so Arjuna should rise and fight.

  38. Krishna

    2.38

Sukha-duhkhe same kritva labhalabhau jayajayau, tato yuddhaya yujyasva naivam papam avapsyasi.

    English

Treating pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat alike, engage in battle; thus you shall not incur sin.

Fighting with equanimity toward outcomes keeps one free of sin.

  39. Krishna

    2.39

Esha te 'bhihita sankhye buddhir yoge tv imam shrinu, buddhya yukto yaya Partha karma-bandham prahasyasi.

    English

This wisdom has been explained to you in terms of Sankhya (knowledge); now hear it in terms of Yoga (action), endowed with which, Partha, you shall cast off the bondage of action.

Krishna now shifts from philosophy to the practical yoga of action.

  40. Krishna

    2.40

Neha abhikrama-nasho 'sti pratyavayo na vidyate, svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat.

    English

In this path, no effort is ever lost, and there is no adverse result. Even a little of this discipline protects one from great fear.

Even a small effort on this spiritual path is never wasted and offers real protection.

  41. Krishna

    2.41

Vyavasayatmika buddhir eka iha kuru-nandana, bahu-shakha hy anantash cha buddhayo 'vyavasayinam.

    English

Here, O joy of the Kurus, the resolute understanding is single-pointed; but the thoughts of the irresolute are many-branched and endless.

A focused, determined mind has one clear aim; a scattered mind wanders endlessly.

  42. Krishna

    2.42-2.43

Yam imam pushpitam vacham pravadanty avipashchitah, veda-vada-ratah Partha na anyad astiti vadinah. Kamatmanah svarga-para janma-karma-phala-pradam, kriya-vishesha-bahulam bhogaishvarya-gatim prati.

    English

The unwise, delighting in the flowery words of the Vedas, declare that there is nothing else; being full of desires, aiming at heaven, they speak of elaborate rites leading to rebirth as the fruit of action, aimed at enjoyment and power.

Those attached to ritual for reward miss the deeper truth beyond desire and heaven.

  43. Krishna

    2.44

Bhogaishvarya-prasaktanam taya apahrita-chetasam, vyavasayatmika buddhih samadhau na vidhiyate.

    English

For those attached to pleasure and power, whose minds are carried away by such talk, the resolute understanding is not established in deep meditation.

Attachment to pleasure and status prevents the mind from finding true stillness.

  44. Krishna

    2.45

    Trai-gunya-vishaya veda nistrai-gunyo bhava Arjuna, nirdvandvo nitya-satva-stho niryoga-kshema atmavan.

    English

The Vedas deal with the three gunas; be free from these three, Arjuna - beyond dualities, ever established in truth, indifferent to gain and security, and self-possessed.

Krishna urges Arjuna to rise above the Vedas' ritual concerns to inner steadiness.

  45. Krishna

    2.46

Yavan artha udapane sarvatah samplutodake, tavan sarveshu vedeshu brahmanasya vijanatah.

    English

To the enlightened sage, all the Vedas are as useful as a small well when there is a vast flood of water everywhere.

For one who has realized the truth, ritual scripture becomes as unnecessary as a well beside a flood.

  46. Krishna

    2.47

Karmany eva adhikaras te ma phaleshu kadachana, ma karma-phala-hetur bhur ma te sango 'stv akarmani.

    English

You have a right to perform your duty, but never to the fruits of action. Do not let the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.

The Gita's most famous verse: do your duty without attachment to results.

  47. Krishna

    2.48

Yoga-sthah kuru karmani sangam tyaktva Dhananjaya, siddhy-asiddhyoh samo bhutva samatvam yoga uchyate.

    English

Established in yoga, perform action, O Dhananjaya, abandoning attachment, and remain balanced in success and failure. This equanimity is called yoga.

Yoga is defined as evenness of mind in success and failure while acting without attachment.

  48. Krishna

    2.49

Dureṇa hy avaram karma buddhi-yogad Dhananjaya, buddhau sharanam anviccha kripanah phala-hetavah.

    English

Action with selfish motive is far inferior to the yoga of wisdom, Dhananjaya. Seek refuge in wisdom; pitiable are those who act for the sake of results.

Acting for reward is inferior to acting with wisdom and equanimity.

  49. Krishna

    2.50

Buddhi-yukto jahatiha ubhe sukrita-dushkrite, tasmad yogaya yujyasva yogah karmasu kaushalam.

    English

One united with wisdom casts off, even in this life, both good and evil deeds. Therefore strive for yoga; yoga is skill in action.

A wise person transcends both good and bad karma — skillful action is yoga.

  50. Krishna

    2.51

    English

The wise, united with wisdom, renounce the fruit of action; freed from the bondage of birth, they attain the state beyond sorrow.

Wise, unattached action leads to freedom from the cycle of rebirth.

  51. Krishna

    2.52

Yada te moha-kalilam buddhir vyatitarishyati, tada gantasi nirvedam shrotavyasya shrutasya cha.

    English

When your intellect crosses beyond the mire of delusion, you shall become indifferent to what has been heard and what is yet to be heard.

Once the mind clears of delusion, worldly teachings lose their pull.

  52. Krishna

    2.53

    English

When your intellect, bewildered by conflicting scriptural opinions, stands unmoved and steady in deep concentration, then you shall attain yoga.

True yoga arrives when the mind becomes unshakeable, undistracted by conflicting doctrines.

  53. Arjuna

    2.54

    English

Arjuna said: What is the description of one whose wisdom is steady and who is absorbed in deep contemplation, Keshava? How does the steady-minded one speak, sit, or walk?

Arjuna asks Krishna to describe a person of steady, enlightened wisdom.

    English

The Blessed Lord said: When a person completely gives up all desires of the mind, O Partha, and is satisfied in the self by the self alone, then one is said to be of steady wisdom.

A person of steady wisdom has let go of all mental cravings and finds contentment within.

  55. Krishna

Yada samharate chayam kurmo 'ngani iva sarvashah, indriyani indriyarthebhyas tasya prajna pratishthita.

    English

When, like a tortoise drawing in its limbs from all sides, one withdraws the senses from their objects, that person's wisdom is firmly established.

Like a tortoise pulling in its limbs, the wise withdraw their senses from worldly distractions.

    English

The objects of the senses turn away from the abstinent person, though the taste for them remains; but even that taste ceases upon realizing the Supreme.

Restraint alone weakens desire, but only inner realization removes it fully.

    2.60

    English

While contemplating the objects of the senses, one develops attachment to them; from attachment arises desire, and from desire arises anger.

Dwelling on sense objects breeds attachment, then desire, then anger — the chain begins.

  62. Krishna

    2.63

    English

From anger comes delusion; from delusion, confused memory; from confused memory, loss of reason; and from loss of reason, one is utterly ruined.

The chain continues: anger clouds judgment, and ultimately leads to downfall.

    English

There is no wisdom for the undisciplined, nor is there meditation for the undisciplined; without meditation there is no peace, and without peace, how can there be happiness?

Without discipline there's no wisdom, no peace, and no true happiness.

  66. Krishna

    2.67

Indriyanam hi charatam yan mano 'nuvidhiyate, tad asya harati prajnam vayur navam iva ambhasi.

    English

As the wind carries away a boat on the waters, even one roaming sense to which the mind yields can carry away one's wisdom.

One wandering sense can sweep away wisdom, like wind driving a boat off course.

  67. Krishna

    2.68

    English

Therefore, O mighty-armed one, one whose senses are completely restrained from their objects has firmly established wisdom.

Full mastery over the senses is what gives lasting stability of wisdom.

  68. Krishna

Apuryamanam achala-pratishtham samudram apah pravishanti yadvat, tadvat kama yam pravishanti sarve sa shantim apnoti na kama-kami.

    English

As waters flow into the ocean, which remains ever full and unmoved, so all desires enter one who attains peace - not the one who desires objects of pleasure.

Peace belongs to one whose mind stays unmoved by desire, like the ocean unmoved by rivers.

    English

The person who abandons all desires and moves without longing, free from possessiveness and ego, attains peace.

Peace comes to one who releases desire, possessiveness, and ego.

    2.72

Esha brahmi sthitih Partha naiman prapya vimuhyati, sthitvasyam anta-kale 'pi brahma-nirvanam ricchati.

    English

This is the state of union with Brahman, O Partha; having attained it, one is never again deluded. Established in this even at the last moment of life, one attains liberation in Brahman.

The chapter's closing verse: attaining this divine state, even at death, leads to ultimate liberation.
