Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā · Chapter 17 of 18
Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga — The Yoga of the Threefold Division of Faith
श्रद्धात्रयविभागयोगः
Arjuna asks Krishna about the status of those who worship with faith but outside scriptural guidance. Krishna answers by extending the three-qualities framework from Chapter 14 across the practical dimensions of daily life: the deities one worships, the food one prefers, and the way one performs worship, austerity, and charity all reveal whether a person's nature is pure, passionate, or ignorant. He describes the qualities of pure food (nourishing, substantial), passionate food (spicy, sharp), and ignorant food (stale, impure), and applies the same threefold lens to how sacrifice, austerity, and giving can be done with or without proper spirit and intention. The chapter closes with an explanation of the sacred formula 'Om Tat Sat,' the threefold name for Brahman used to consecrate acts of worship, austerity, and charity, and Krishna's warning that anything done without faith is called 'Asat' and holds no true value.
