Moksha Sanyasa YogaThe Yoga of Liberation Through Renunciation

In this final, longest chapter, Arjuna asks Krishna to distinguish renunciation (sannyasa) from relinquishment (tyaga). Krishna answers with a sweeping synthesis of the entire Gita's teaching, classifying knowledge, action, the doer, intellect, steadiness, and even happiness itself into three kinds -- pure, passionate, and ignorant -- according to the three qualities of nature. He explains the social duties suited to different natural temperaments and insists that one's own duty, even imperfectly performed, is better than another's duty done well. Building to the Gita's climax, Krishna urges Arjuna to surrender all actions to him, promising that devotion leads to liberation, and finally declares his most direct teaching: abandon all other duties and take refuge in Krishna alone, who will free him from all sin. Arjuna declares his delusion destroyed and his resolve restored. Sanjaya then closes the entire Gita, recalling the wonder of what he witnessed and declaring that wherever Krishna and Arjuna stand together, victory and righteousness will follow.

  1. Arjuna

    18.1

saṃnyāsasya mahābāho tattvamicchāmi veditum, tyāgasya ca hṛṣīkeśa pṛthakkeśiniṣūdana.

    English

Arjuna asked: O mighty One! I desire to know how relinquishment is distinguished from renunciation.

Arjuna asks Krishna to explain the true difference between renunciation (sannyasa) and relinquishment (tyaga).

  2. Krishna

    18.2

kāmyānāṃ karmaṇāṃ nyāsaṃ saṃnyāsaṃ kavayo viduḥ, sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṃ prāhustyāgaṃ vicakṣaṇāḥ.

    English

Lord Shri Krishna replied: The sages say that renunciation means forgoing an action which springs from desire; and relinquishing means the surrender of its fruit.

Krishna explains that sages call giving up desire-driven actions 'renunciation,' while giving up the fruits of all actions is called 'relinquishment.'

  3. Krishna

    18.3

tyājyaṃ doṣavadityeke karma prāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ, yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyamiti cāpare.

    English

Some philosophers say that all action is evil and should be abandoned. Others that acts of sacrifice, benevolence and austerity should not be given up.

Some thinkers say all action should be abandoned as flawed, while others say acts of sacrifice, charity, and austerity should never be abandoned.

  4. Krishna

    18.4

niścayaṃ śrṛṇu me tatra tyāge bharatasattama, tyāgo hi puruṣavyāghra trividhaḥ saṃprakīrtitaḥ.

    English

O best of Indians! Listen to my judgment as regards this problem. It has a threefold aspect.

Krishna promises to give his own definitive judgment on relinquishment, which he says is of three kinds.

  5. Krishna

    18.5

yajñadānatapaḥkarma na tyājyaṃ kāryameva tat, yajño dānaṃ tapaścaiva pāvanāni manīṣiṇām.

    English

Acts of sacrifice, benevolence and austerity should not be given up but should be performed, for they purify the aspiring soul.

Acts of sacrifice, charity, and austerity should not be abandoned; they should be performed, since they purify the wise.

  6. Krishna

    18.6

etānyapi tu karmāṇi saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalāni ca, kartavyānīti me pārtha niścitaṃ matamuttamam.

    English

But they should be done with detachment and without thought of recompense. This is my final judgment.

Krishna's firm conclusion: even these acts should be performed without attachment or desire for their results.

  7. Krishna

    18.7

niyatasya tu saṃnyāsaḥ karmaṇo nopapadyate, mohāttasya parityāgastāmasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ.

    English

It is not right to give up actions which are obligatory; and if they are misunderstood, it is the result of sheer ignorance.

Giving up an obligatory duty is not proper; abandoning it out of confusion is considered relinquishment born of ignorance.

  8. Krishna

    18.8

duḥkhamityeva yatkarma kāyakleśabhayāttyajet, sa kṛtvā rājasaṃ tyāgaṃ naiva tyāgaphalaṃ labhet.

    English

To avoid an action through fear of physical suffering, because it is likely to be painful, is to act from passion, and the benefit of renunciation will not follow.

Giving up an action merely because it is difficult or out of fear of physical discomfort is relinquishment born of passion, and yields no real benefit.

  9. Krishna

    18.9

kāryamityeva yatkarma niyataṃ kriyate'rjuna, saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalaṃ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ.

    English

He who performs an obligatory action, because he believes it to be a duty which ought to be done, without any personal desire to do the act or to receive any return - such renunciation is Pure.

Performing an obligatory duty simply because it ought to be done, giving up attachment and desire for its fruit, is considered pure relinquishment.

  10. Krishna

    18.10

na dveṣṭyakuśalaṃ karma kuśale nānuṣajjate, tyāgī sattvasamāviṣṭo medhāvī chinnasaṃśayaḥ.

    English

The wise man who has attained purity, whose doubts are solved, who is filled with the spirit of self-abnegation, does not shrink from action because it brings pain, nor does he desire it because it brings pleasure.

The wise relinquisher, free of doubt, neither dislikes an unpleasant duty nor clings to a pleasant one.

  11. Krishna

    18.11

    English

But since those still in the body cannot entirely avoid action, in their case abandonment of the fruit of action is considered as complete renunciation.

Since an embodied being cannot give up all action entirely, one who gives up the fruit of action is truly said to have relinquished.

  12. Krishna

    18.12

aniṣṭamiṣṭaṃ miśraṃ ca trividhaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalam, bhavatyatyāgināṃ pretya na tu saṃnyāsināṃ kvacit.

    English

For those who cannot renounce all desire, the fruit of action hereafter is threefold - good, evil, and partly good and partly evil. But for him who has renounced, there is none.

For those attached to results, the fruit of action after death is threefold -- pleasant, unpleasant, or mixed; for the relinquisher, there is no such fruit at all.

  13. Krishna

    18.13

pañcaitāni mahābāho kāraṇāni nibodha me, sāṃkhye kṛtānte proktāni siddhaye sarvakarmaṇām.

    English

I will tell thee now, O Mighty Man, the five causes which, according to the final decision of philosophy, must concur before an action can be accomplished.

Krishna will now explain, as taught in Sankhya philosophy, the five causes behind the accomplishment of every action.

  14. Krishna

    18.14

adhiṣṭhānaṃ tathā kartā karaṇaṃ ca pṛthagvidham, vividhāśca pṛthakceṣṭā daivaṃ caivātra pañcamam.

    English

They are a body, a personality, physical organs, their manifold activity and destiny.

These five are: the body, the individual agent, the various instruments, the many kinds of effort, and divine providence.

  15. Krishna

    18.15

śarīravāṅmanobhiryatkarma prārabhate naraḥ, nyāyyaṃ vā viparītaṃ vā pañcaite tasya hetavaḥ.

    English

Whatever action a man performs, whether by muscular effort or by speech or by thought, and whether it be right or wrong, these five are the essential causes.

Whatever action a person undertakes with body, speech, or mind, whether right or wrong, these five factors are its causes.

  16. Krishna

    18.16

tatraivaṃ sati kartāramātmānaṃ kevalaṃ tu yaḥ, paśyatyakṛtabuddhitvānna sa paśyati durmatiḥ.

    English

But the fool who supposes, because of his immature judgment, that it is his own Self alone that acts, he perverts the truth and does not see rightly.

One whose understanding is untrained and who sees only the isolated self as the sole doer does not see clearly.

  17. Krishna

    18.17

    English

He who has no pride, and whose intellect is unalloyed by attachment, even though he kill these people, yet he does not kill them, and his act does not bind him.

One free of the sense of 'I am the doer,' whose understanding is not tainted, does not truly kill even if they kill, and is not bound by the act.

  18. Krishna

    18.18

jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ parijñātā trividhā karmacodanā, karaṇaṃ karma karteti trividhaḥ karmasaṃgrahaḥ.

    English

Knowledge, the knower and the object of knowledge, these are the three incentives to action; and the act, the actor and the instrument are the threefold constituents.

Knowledge, the object of knowledge, and the knower together set action in motion; action, its means, and the doer make up its threefold basis.

  19. Krishna

    18.19

jñānaṃ karma ca kartā ca tridhaiva guṇabhedataḥ, procyate guṇasaṃkhyāne yathāvacchṛṇu tānyapi.

    English

The knowledge, the act and the doer differ according to the Qualities. Listen to this too:

Knowledge, action, and the doer are each said to be of three kinds according to the three qualities; Krishna will describe these in turn.

  20. Krishna

    18.20

sarvabhūteṣu yenaikaṃ bhāvamavyayamīkṣate, avibhaktaṃ vibhakteṣu tajjñānaṃ viddhi sāttvikam.

    English

That knowledge which sees the One Indestructible in all beings, the One Indivisible in all separate lives, may be truly called Pure Knowledge.

Knowledge that perceives one undivided reality present equally in all separate beings is knowledge born of purity.

  21. Krishna

    18.21

pṛthaktvena tu yajjñānaṃ nānābhāvānpṛthagvidhān, vetti sarveṣu bhūteṣu tajjñānaṃ viddhi rājasam.

    English

The knowledge which thinks of the manifold existence in all beings as separate - that comes from Passion.

Knowledge that perceives distinct and separate realities within different beings is knowledge born of passion.

  22. Krishna

    18.22

yattu kṛtsnavadekasminkārye saktamahaitukam, atattvārthavadalpaṃ ca tattāmasamudāhṛtam.

    English

But that which clings blindly to one idea as if it were all, without logic, truth or insight, that has its origin in Darkness.

Knowledge that clings to a single narrow view as if it were the whole truth, without reason or real insight, is knowledge born of ignorance.

  23. Krishna

    18.23

niyataṃ saṅgarahitamarāgadveṣataḥ kṛtam, aphalaprepsunā karma yattatsāttvikamucyate.

    English

An obligatory action done by one who is disinterested, who neither likes nor dislikes it, and gives no thought to the consequences that follow, such an action is Pure.

An obligatory action performed without attachment, without desire or aversion, and without craving its result, is action born of purity.

  24. Krishna

    18.24

yattu kāmepsunā karma sāhaṅkāreṇa vā punaḥ, kriyate bahulāyāsaṃ tadrājasamudāhṛtam.

    English

But even though an action involve the most strenuous endeavour, yet if the doer is seeking to gratify his desires, and is filled with personal vanity, it may be assumed to originate in Passion.

Action performed by one seeking to fulfill desires, driven by ego, with great effort, is action born of passion.

  25. Krishna

    18.25

    English

An action undertaken through delusion, and with no regard to the spiritual issues involved, or the real capacity of the doer, or to the injury which may follow, such an act may be assumed to be the product of Ignorance.

Action undertaken out of delusion, disregarding consequences, loss, harm to others, or one's own ability, is action born of ignorance.

  26. Krishna

    18.26

    English

But when a man has no sentiment and no personal vanity, when he possesses courage and confidence, cares not whether he succeeds or fails, then his action arises from Purity.

A doer free from attachment and ego, endowed with steadiness and enthusiasm, unaffected by success or failure, is called a doer of purity.

  27. Krishna

    18.27

  28. Krishna

    18.28

    English

While he whose purpose is infirm, who is low-minded, stubborn, dishonest, malicious, indolent, despondent, procrastinating - he may be assumed to be in Darkness.

    English

Reason and conviction are threefold, according to the Quality which is dominant. I will explain them fully and severally, O Arjuna!

Krishna promises to fully explain the threefold division of intellect and steadiness according to the three qualities.

  30. Krishna

    18.30

pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca kāryākārye bhayābhaye, bandhaṃ mokṣaṃ ca yā vetti buddhiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī.

    English

That intellect which understands the creation and dissolution of life, what actions should be done and what not, which discriminates between fear and fearlessness, bondage and deliverance, that is Pure.

The intellect that knows right action from wrong, what to do and not do, fear from fearlessness, and bondage from liberation, is intellect of purity.

Sanskrit and named translations (Swami Ramsukhdas for Hindi, Shri Purohit Swami for English) sourced from the user-supplied bhagavad_gita_chapter_18.json (github.com/bhavykhatri/DharmicData, ODbL license), processed locally. Transliteration (IAST) generated with the indic_transliteration library and lightly reformatted; plain_summary composed for this repository. This is the Gita's longest chapter (78 verses), which is why its raw source file is markedly larger than earlier chapters -- confirmed not corrupted, just proportionally larger given the same ~20-commentary-per-verse structure used throughout this dataset. Verse 18.2 was missing the usual Swami Ramsukhdas Hindi translation in the source; Swami Tejomayananda's Hindi translation was used as a fallback for that verse only, since it follows the same format. Like Chapters 12-17, this source file's formatting is inconsistent per verse; the same general prefix-based tag detection, auto-spacing, and whitespace-collapsing fixes were applied. Three speakers are tagged (Arjuna at 18.1 and 18.73, Krishna at 18.2 continuing untagged through 18.72, Sanjaya at 18.74 continuing untagged through the closing verse). The recurring vowel-sign transposition glitch was corrected via the same general regex used from Chapter 7 onward. This chapter completes the full 18-chapter Bhagavad Gita in this collection.
