Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā · Chapter 6 of 18
Atma Sanyama Yoga — The Yoga of Self-Control (Meditation)
Krishna describes the yogi as one who acts without craving results, and explains the discipline of meditation in practical detail: choosing a clean, quiet place, sitting steady with a controlled posture, moderating food and sleep, and fixing the mind on the Self until it becomes as still as a lamp sheltered from wind. He describes the goal as seeing the Self in all beings and all beings in the Self, and seeing Krishna everywhere. Arjuna objects that the mind is too restless, turbulent, and hard to control for such a discipline to be practical. Krishna agrees the mind is hard to master but says it can be done through practice and detachment, and reassures Arjuna that even a yogi who falls short is never lost -- such a person is reborn into favorable circumstances and continues toward perfection over further lifetimes. The chapter closes with Krishna naming the true yogi, one who worships him with full faith, as the greatest of all.

English
Lord Shri Krishna said: He who acts because it is his duty, not thinking of the consequences, is really spiritual and a true ascetic; and not he who merely observes rituals or who shuns all action.
Krishna says one who acts as duty demands, without craving results, is the true renunciant -- not one who merely gives up ritual fire and action.

O Arjuna! Renunciation is in fact what is called Right Action. No one can become spiritual who has not renounced all desire.
What is called renunciation, Krishna says, is really yoga itself; no one becomes a yogi without renouncing personal desire.

It is not possible to attain Self-Realisation if a man does not know how to control himself; but for him who, striving by proper means, learns such control, it is possible.

Having failed in both, my Lord, is he without hope, like a riven cloud having no support, lost on the spiritual road?

English
Lord Shri Krishna replied: My beloved child! There is no destruction for him, either in this world or in the next. No evil fate awaits him who treads the path of righteousness.
Krishna assures Arjuna that such a person is never destroyed, either in this world or the next -- one who does good is never overtaken by misfortune.

English
Unconsciously he will return to the practices of his old life; so that he who tries to realise spiritual consciousness is certainly superior to one who only talks of it.
Even without willing it, he is carried forward by that earlier practice; even one who merely seeks to know yoga transcends the ritualist's path.
Krishna
